Deadline had reported that a live-action Voltron film is certainly in the works. Its rights were acquired by Universal sometime back, and the studio has now started work on the project, but, there is no release date specified yet. Not many other details have also emerged, but, for us, just knowing that a live-action Voltron film is in the works is good enough to celebrate.
The announcement about the live-action Voltron film seems to have come at a time when there is a rise in popularity of this well-known franchise. Apart from the upcoming film, Voltron also had a television return earlier when Netflix started Voltron: Legendary Defender. In a period dominated by franchises which are busy encashing our nostalgia for the content from the 1980s and 1990s, a brand new Voltron franchise definitely has a great appeal.
In fact, it is a bit surprising that it took such a long time for someone to plan a live-action Voltron movie. Among the current spurt of superhero films and the rapid rise in nostalgia-driven projects such as Power Rangers, we had expected Voltron to come much earlier. In fact, even the Michael Bay helmed Transformers franchise is now over a decade old.
Creatively speaking, a live-action Voltron film seems to be in safe hands as of now. David Hayter is preparing the script, and it is expected to satisfy the tastes of loyal fanboys and yet maintain a compelling mainstream charm. Hayter has written the first two X-Men films and also Watchmen. Therefore, he is certainly capable of adapting the source material down to its most appealing elements. Further, he also voiced Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, which makes him a little experienced in dealing with crazy fans.
