Born on August 24, 1973 in Barendrecht, Netherlands, Inge de Bruijn is a former Dutch competitive swimmer. De Bruijn is a former world record-holder who tried various sports before eventually taking up swimming. She debuted at the World Aquatics Championships in January 1991 and won a bronze medal with the 4×100 metre relay team, with which she won the gold medal at the European LC Championships in August 1991.

In the following year, de Bruijn debuted at the Olympic when she participated in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and finished 8^th in the 100 m and the 4×100 m freestyle events. She didn’t compete in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In the year 1999, she won the 50 m freestyle at the European Championships. In 2000, after having swum a number of 50 m freestyle world records, she participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She won the 50 and 100 m freestyle, and the 100 m butterfly, creating new world records in all three events in the process. She also won a silver medal with the 4×100 m freestyle relay team, getting the nickname “Invincible Inky.”

The Swimming World magazine called her the “Female World Swimmer of the Year” in 2000 and 2001. She won titles in three events at the 2001 World Championships. At the 2003 World Championships, de Bruijn successfully retained her 50 m freestyle and butterfly titles.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, she was able to defend her 50 m freestyle gold and also won silver in the 100 m freestyle as well as bronzes in the 100 m butterfly and in the 4×100 m relay. This also meant that she became the oldest individual champion in the history of Olympic swimming. Later Anthony Ervin surpassed her at the age of 36 when he won gold for the men’s 50 m freestyle at the Rio 2016 Olympics. De Bruijn’s 2004 victory is still the oldest female Olympic champion ever.

She has a career tally of four golds, two silvers and two bronzes at the Olympics and is the second most successful Olympian from her country of all-time. She has also a combined nine individual titles at the Olympics (four) and the World Aquatics Championships (five) which were a record until Katie Ledecky won her 10^th at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She retired from competitive swimming in March 2007.
