‘The Matrix’ Relaunch Writer Teases Expanded Universe of Movies

It has been known to fans that Warner Bros. has been aiming to launch The Matrix once again, infusing new life into the innovative money spinner created by the Wachowski Sisters. However, there hasn’t been much progress about it.

However, screenwriter Zak Penn seems to have provided an insight into the grand plans of the studio, probably hinting at a shared universe depicting a world where humans are competing with machines.

During a recent interview, Penn stated his desire to recreate The Matrix, but, not to reboot it.

“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in…a phase right now,” said Penn. “That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too.”

Just before his latest movie Ready Player One’s premiere, Penn talked about the resemblance between the two films and their virtual world environments.

“I think OASIS (the virtual space in Ready Player One) is similar,” Penn said. “Both the Matrix and OASIS are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes… When it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, they’re going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, The Matrix is still one of my favorite…they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.”

Penn clarified that he is not going to reboot The Matrix, but, then what else is possible? It might be that he would delve deeper into another region of the universe set up by the Wachowskis, taking the series into what might be a shared universe.

It might be something along the lines fo MCU or the Star Wars, incorporating spinoffs, but, that’s to be seen yet. There is a tendency to give further depth to the world where machines run on energy harvested from humans and put the human consciousness into the virtual world.

The animated spinoff titled The Animatrix revealed an anthology of stories, and then the video game Enter the Matrix went deeper into the story of Niobe and Ghost, whereas The Matrix Online focused on the world after Neo’s death.

It remains to be seen whether WB will go ahead with Penn’s vision related to The Matrix’s revival, or what structure will those plans create in the future. Let’s just hope there is some involvement of Keanu Reeves in whatever way possible.
