Her father, Konstantin Dobrev, is a computer specialist, and her mother, Michaela Dobreva, is an artist. She has an older brother named Aleksandar Dobrev. She speaks English, French, and Bulgarian.
She studied Sociology at Ryerson University but left to pursue her acting career. Her first acting role was Mia Jones in the teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation.
The movies that she has acted in are:- The Perks of Being a Wallflower, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and Flatliners in 2017.
She studied at Vradenburg Junior Public School and J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School. She studied ballet to jazz and competed in rhythmic gymnastics. After Degrassi ended, she played the lead Elena Gilbert, in The CW’s supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries, based on the book series of the same name. She also played a variety of versions of Elena on the series, most prominently a 500-year-old vampire named Katherine Pierce.
She played Tatia in the spinoff The Originals. After 6 seasons of playing Elena, the actress announced via Instagram that she would be leaving The Vampire Diaries and would return as Elena in The Vampire Diaries series finale.
In April 2011, she played Candace Kelmeckis in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, alongside Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Paul Rudd, based on the novel by the same name. She acted with Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. in the comedy Let’s Be Cops.
In 2017, she played weapons specialist Becky Claridge in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, opposite Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson.
While filming The Vampire Diaries, she lived in Atlanta and moved to Los Angeles after leaving the series in 2015. The actress currently lives in Los Angeles.
