Princess Jasmine is a fictional character from Walt Disney Pictures’ animated film Aladdin (1992). American actress Linda Larkin voiced her and the singing voice was provided by Filipina singer Lea Salonga. Jasmine happens to be the joyful Princess of Agrabah who has become fed up of her life within the walls of her palace. Despite an ancient law making it mandatory that the princess has to marry a prince before her upcoming birthday, Jasmine is resolute about marrying the person she loves instead of his stature. Directors Ron Clements and John Musker created the character with screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Jasmine is inspired by Badroulbadour, a princess who was mentioned in One Thousand and One Nights’ folk story “Aladdin and the Magical Lamp.”

She was originally created as a spoiled, materialistic princess, but, the writers ultimately re-wrote Jasmine as a strong-willed and more dominating heroine after removing Aladdin’s mother from the story and integrating some of the elements from a romantic comedy Roman Holiday (1953). After several months of having been cast in the role, Larkin was almost fired from the project because Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg didn’t find her voice suitable for a princess, but, Clements and Musker succeeded in convincing him. After casting director Albert Tavares discovered her, Lea Salonga was cast as Jasmine’s singing voice courtesy of her performance in the musical Miss Saigon. This casting choice made Jasmine the first Disney princess to be voiced by two different actresses for voice and singing. Mark Henn created the animation of Jasmine’s design. She is a vivid mix of unique sources, including an unknown theme park visitor, Henn’s sister and actress Jennifer Connelly.

Unlike the other Disney princesses, Jasmine is regarded as a supporting character in her own film and plays the secondary role of hero’s love interest. The character has been subject to mixed reviews and a lot of negative feedback aimed at her storyline and personality, both of which were slammed as uninteresting and unoriginal. Jasmine was accused of being shallow in comparison to Ariel and Belle from The Little Mermaid (1989) and Beauty and the Beast (1991), respectively, and she is still compared to those two. However, since she is the sixth Disney Princess and the first non-white character from the franchise, she is also credited with introducing racial diversity to Disney’s princess lineup. Jasmine was also seen in Aladdin’s sequels The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin the King of Thieves (1996) and its TV series as well as a Broadway musical adaptation of the film. Larkin and Salonga have both been awarded Disney Legends for their contributions to Jasmine. In the upcoming live-action version of Aladdin, actress Naomi Scott will play the character.
