Estelle Merle O’Brien Thompson was born in Bombay, British India on 19th February 1911. She was taught in that country until the age of 17 when she evacuated for London. Oberon started her career in British films with primarily forgettable characters or bit parts.
She occurred in an uncredited character in Alf’s Button in 1930, a pattern that would, unfortunately, repeat itself perennial over the next three years. However, film magnates ultimately saw an untapped power in their midst and started grooming Oberon for something bigger.
Ultimately, she landed a character with substance: the part of Ysobel d’Orsay in Men of Tomorrow in 1932. That was quickly followed by The Private Life of Henry VII. After her image of Lady Marguerite Blakeney in The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1934 Hollywood beckoned and she quit trying her hand in US films.
American movie directors already had some notion of her talent because her 1934 film Vagabond Violinist was a success in that country. With her selection for an Academy Award for Best Actress as Kitty Vane in The Dark Angel Oberon evolved a star in both England and the US.

Her work in that film arose in offers for more quality pictures, and she occurred in numerous well-received films, such as Over the Moon, These Three, The Divorce of Lady X. She most critically praised performance–hailed by some critics as masterful–was as Cathy Linton in Wuthering Heights.
The 1940s substantiated to be a very active decade for her, as she seemed in no less than 15 films. After her character in Berlin Express, she would not be seen on the screen again until four years later, as Elizabeth Rockwell in The Lady from Boston in 1951.
There were no films for her in 1955, only one in 1956 and then none until in 1963 Of Love and Desire. In between, she did arrive on television as host of the TV series Interval and Assessment Foreign Legion.
After her career ultimately ended she dwelled in quiet retirement until her death of a massive stroke on 23rd November 1979, in Malibu, California. Oberon was 68 and had maintained her elegance to the end.
