Born on 8^th April (died on 2^nd March, 1978) Patricia Beck was an American writer from New York state. She was born in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, New York. In the year 1933, her mother remarried after her father had died in the year 1926, and from 1934 to 1938, the family moved around and lived at various locations all over Europe. Beck ‘s mother married a boxer Paul George Swiderski and she Beck lived an idiosyncratic lifestyle due to this. She was a Catholic who attended a convent school and had very little freedom. Once the Spanish Civil War, her family relocated again to the United States wehre she completed her secondary education and later enrolled at Bennington College.

In the year 1946, she became depressed after her personal life started affecting hereducation and she was forced to leave school after her mother’s death due to cancer during her freshman year. She spent some time in the psychiatric unit at Albany Hospital, she spent time at Buzzards Bay, Massachsetts. She eventually returned to Bennington.

Beck had maintained diaries right from the time she was fourteen until she died, and she wrote a number of works throughout her life. However, it is only two of her short stories “A Promise in the Wind” and “Come Down to the Willow” got published while she was alive. Her short stories were compiled into a volume titled A Gift of Kindling and Other Stories which was published after her death. Her papers such as correspondence, manuscripts, semi-autobiographical novels, poems, personal diaries, and notebooks are now under custody of Smith College in the Women and Disabilities section of the Sophia Smith Collection. A lot of her work was not published while she was alive and it provides a rare insight into her chronic illness and depression.
