Born on October 9, 1986, Laure Manaudou is a former French Olympic, world and European champion swimmer. Manaudou won the gold medal in the women’s 400 meter freestyle event at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. It was the first time that a French athlete won the gold medal in women’s swimming and the first since Jean Boiteux had won in the 400 meter men’s freestyle event at Helsinki in 1952. Manaudou also won the silver medal in the women’s 800 m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100 meter backstroke, and became only the second Frenchwoman to win three medals in the same edition of the Olympic Games. Manadou was easily the best French swimmer that year, but, didn’t have a strong enough team to win the women’s 4×200 m freestyle relay.

She is joint third (with three medals) on the all-time French multiple female Winter or Summer Olympic medal winners’ list which is topped by fencer Laura Flessel-Colovic who has five Olympic medals. In the 2008 Summer Olympics, she failed to repeat her 2004 performance. Despite starting strong and being in the lead at the 200-meter mark, she ended up 8^th in the 400 m freestyle final and had a finishing time of 4:11:26. She retired on September 17, 2009 when she was only 22-years-old. She mentioned in her statement in Le Parisien newspaper, “It came to me little by little. I didn’t make it on impulse. It has matured slowly.”

However, Manaudou tried competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics in three events, 100 m backstroke, 200 m backstroke, and the 4×100 m medley relay, but, failed to go beyond the first round heats in all the three disciplines. She also held the world record in freestyle events between 200 and 1500 meter.

Manaudou is in a relationship with Frero Delavega singer Jeremy Frerot and has a son named Lou (born on July 18, 2017) with him.
