Born as Donna belle Mullenger on January 27, 1921 (died January 14, 1986), she was an American film and television actress and producer renowned as Donna Reed. She was born on a farm near Denison, Iowa. She was raised as a Methodist. In the year 1936, when she was in her sophomore year at the Denison (Iowa) High School, her chemistry teacher Edward Tompkins gave her the book How To Win Friends and Influence People. It is said that the book had a great impact on her life. After reading it, she won the lead in the school play, and was voted Campus Queen. She also managed to be in top 10 of the 1938 graduating class. Tompkins further worked on the Manhattan Project.

After she graduated from Denison High School, Reed aimed to become a teacher, but, couldn’t afford college. She decided to relocate to California to attend Los Angeles City College upon her aunt’s advice.

During college time, she appeared in a number of stage productions, despite not having any plans to take up acting as a career. She received various screen test offers from studios, and Reed eventually signed a deal with MGM. However, she insisted on completing her education first.

She had a career spanning over 40 years, and appeared in more than 40 movies. She is renowed for playing the role of Mary Hatch Bailey in Frank Capra’s film It’s A Wonderful Life (1946). In 1943 she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing the role of Lorene Burke in the war drama From Here to Eternity.

Reed is famous for her TV work, especially as Donna Stone, a middle-class American mother and housewife, in The Donna Reed Show from 1958 to 1966. She received a number of Emmy Award nominations for this role and the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star in 1963. Later she appeared as Barbara Bel Geddes’ replacement in Miss Elle Ewing Farlow in the 1984-1985 season of the TV show Dallas. She later sued the production company for breach of contract when she got fired abruptly when Bel Geddes decided to make a comeback on the show.
