Born as Alice Jeanne Leppert on May 5, 1915 9died on May 9, 1998), she was an American actress and singer. She was born in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. Her mother Alice used to work for the Mirror Chocolate Company and her father Charles Leppert was a police officer. She also had an older brother named Charles. Faye grew up as an Episcopallian. Her entertainment career started when she appeared as a chorus girl in vaudeville. She auditioned unsuccessfully for the Earl Carroll Vanities after it was discovered that she was too young. She then moved to Broadway and played a featured role in 1931 edition of George White’s Scandals. By then, she had picked up her stage name and first had a radio audience on Rudy Valle’s The Fleischmann’s Yeast Hour.

In the year 1944, she won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “You’ll Never Know,” which was Faye’s introduction in the musical film Hello, Frisco, Hello (1943). Faye had two marriages and two daughters. Her first marriage with actor and singer Tony Martin took place in 1937 and they divorced in 1941. She then married actor Phil Harris in 1941, a relationship which continued until his death in 1995.

Faye stated in an interview that upon her marriage with Harris, the Hollywood elite had speculated that the marriage would be over within six months.

Three years after Phil Harris died, Alice Faye died of stomach cancer in Rancho Mirage, California, four days after turning 83.
