This American model, reality television personality, burlesque performer, and actress, who was born on 13 April 1985, in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. She is of Puerto Rican-Peruvian ancestry and is a transgender woman.

Carrera is known for her appearance on the Season 3 of the Logo reality television series RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as its sequel series RuPaul’s Drag U.

Carrera played the role of a transgender server working in a New Jersey diner in an episode of the ABC news program Primetime: What Would You Do? that aired on May 4, 2012. An actor playing a customer criticizes Carrera’s character about his past experience of being served by her when she had presented as male, provoking other customers to defend Carrera. This program was the first occasion in which Carrera publicly revealed herself to be transgender.

On 11 June 2012, Carrera appeared in an episode of the TLC series Cake Boss, “Bar Mitzvah, Beads & Oh Baby!”, in which she unintentionally took part in a prank involving “Cousin Anthony” Bellifemine, who was set up in a date with her. Carrera initially agreed to appear on the program to promote equality for the transgender community, not being aware that she would be involved in a joke. After the program was aired, Carrera rebuked the situation on her Facebook account.

On 12 June 2012, TLC made an announcement that “Bar Mitzvah, Beads & Oh Baby!” is to be re-edited by the network for future broadcast and hence, pulled from rotation indefinitely.

A petition requesting Carrera to serve as a model during the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was initiated, but despite the approximately 45,000 signatures and immense media coverage, the petition was failed.

In March 2014, Carrera openly criticized RuPaul for use of the derogatory “she-male” on a RuPaul’s Drag Race episode and continued to be critical of him when the issue arose again in 2015, after Logo pulled the “Female or SheMale” game from DragRace that provoked RuPaul to defend the use of the word “tranny”. Carrera’s continued protests led to allegations by others that she was biting the hand that fed her, to which she responded that, she appreciates the chance to compete on DragRace but she ultimately earned it through her efforts and those of her agent, fans, family, and friends, and that she was not obliged to support RuPaul’s use of transphobic language.
