You don’t need to be concerned about Superman dying due to age-related issues because a new comic has come up which confirms Superman’s immortality and his presence in the long term DC future. That pretty much means billions of more years. In case there is no villain who manages to kill Superman, he might even outlive the planet Earth, which will probably be destroyed a long time after the humanity has left the planet.
The explanation of whether Superman will ever die as long as he has access to a yellow sun’s light will be a part of Action Comics 1000. This anniversary issue is not only going to be the first Brian Michael Bendis story for DC but, also a compilation of various stories from a number of DC creators. The list includes the present Batman writer Tom King, who had given fans an early glimpse of his sentimental short story.
The visual of Superman’s last day on this planet, and the only dear ones that he leaves behind.
Contrary to various DC’s Batman writers, Tom King has been outstanding as a refreshingly emotional, sentimental and evocative. His short story, “Of Tomorrow” has kept that trend going. This is not the first incident of King writing a story depicting a DC hero’s final day on planet Earth, and with impeccable work from Clay Mann, Jordie Bellaire, and John Workman, this story is simply unforgettable.
The Sun eventually roasts Earth totally as predicted by scientists to take place a few billion years from now, and at that moment Superman is present. He is not aiming to push the planet out of the harm’s way or to feel sad about yet another ‘home’ of his being lost. He has been on Earth to visit the grave of his parents, as he has done, according to him in the last five years. As theorized by some fans earlier, King suggests that as a huge, highly capable solar battery, there is no age-related wear and tear to Superman.
Luckily he doesn’t have to live alone forever. As he shares the latest news with Ma and Pa by the side of his grave, his son born to Lois Lane has become a grown-up man that he is proud of. Admittedly, there is no superhero who deserves a happy ending more than the Superman, Clark also informs his parents that Lois is still working hard at running the “Universal Info Network” (is that even a surprise?) while fans can assume that Superman and Jonathan have powers which make them immune to ageing, Clark says that Lois has become “sick of the Eternity Formula. It tastes like grape… she’s tired of grape.”
Once the story comes closer to an end, Superman bids farewell to the remains of his parents. Planet Earth is seen cracking and bursting all around him, and he is at peace. Irrespective of the presence fo their spirits, omnipresence, or nonexistences, the Earth’s imminent destruction implies that they will shortly merge with the universe that created them. A heart-touching climax to an emotional story, and a story that you are better advised not to think too much about.
It is easy to ask questions. Whether Superman and Jonathan also use an Eternity Formula? Are their bodies indestructible? Did humanity become extinct and Superman’s family was left to join some alien civilization? Did humanity disperse on to the new celestial bodies in a billion years from now, as suggested by Superman?
These are questions which won’t be answered by King’s story, and he doesn’t even need to touch upon those questions to relay his message. The fact is, no matter what, nothing would kill Superman. He will keep guarding the universe for billions of years and will nurture a son to do the same thing alongside. There is proof that Lois and Clark’s love story is immortal, and the smart reporter would somehow manage to keep going alongside Superman and her son. While she broadcasts news across galaxies.
As revealed here, Superman would forever miss his parents, each day right till infinity when they ultimately find rest in this or some other world. A large number of comic book lovers would read Action Comics 1000 to find out what’s the next chapter of Superman’s saga. However, DC was correct in providing a glimpse of the end of Superman’s life, love and heritage..an end that will never come.
Why you ask?
Because – he is Superman.
