Movie Version Of Jack Kirby’s DC Comic Book ‘The New Gods’ To Be Directed By Ava DuVernay!

She created history when she became the first woman of color to direct a $100 million-plus live-action movie: A Wrinkle In Time. Now Ava DuVernay is going to be a part of the event movie genre. She is about to finalize a deal with WB and DC to make a big-budget cinematic version of The New Gods, created by the iconic comic book creator Jack Kirby. Kario Salem (Chasing Mavericks) has been given the responsibility of writing the film. He will create the screenplay and work in tandem with DuVernay.

It is going to be yet another $100 million plus movie to be directed by DuVernay, who has risen massively since her debut movie Selma. She revealed her link to New Gods in late 2017 when she had stated on social media that her favorite superhero is “Big Barda. Many reasons”

Big Barda is among the New Gods, and she is married to Mister Miracle, who was also created by Kirby.

This is quite a daring step for Warner Bros. and DC. We don’t say it only because this is the second superhero franchise for which they have put a female director in charge after Patty Jenkins did wonders with Wonder Woman and is now working on Wonder Woman sequel with Gal Gadot. This is quite different from the regular DC stuff of recent years and is a separate world created and designed by Kirby back in 1971, soon after the iconic comic book creator had left Marvel.

It is not linked to any other DC worlds which are a part of the WB chief Toby Emmerich and his DC production president Walter Hamada’s plans to make new films based on the DC comics materials.

The New Gods is where the mega-villain Darkseid comes from. It is also known as the “Fourth World,” created by Kirby. It started in a trilogy of inter-connected comics created by Kirby which were printed at the start of the 70s: New Gods, Forever People, and Mister Miracle. After the world of Gods from the classic mythology got destroyed during the events of Ragnarok, The New Gods replaced them. The Gods occupy two planets: one of them is called New Genesis, a beautiful paradise kind of place and the other is Apokolips, which is literally hell. As expected, a fierce war starts. This universe is replete with super characters which DuVernay can exploit. There is no doubt that this film will be great fun.
