Elsa could have a girlfriend in Frozen 2. This comes after a report stated that Disney had never featured a gay or lesbian character in any of their movies. In response to this, fans began petitioning for Frozen’s Elsa to have a female love interest. Not much has been revealed about Frozen 2 yet, but Jennifer Lee who co-directed Frozen shared her views on this
Lee addressed the topic at the A Wrinkle in Time premiere, when asked about the fan petitions. Although she didn’t give a direct answer, she acknowledged the enthusiasm of the fans and had this to say:
“I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film, that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people. It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations. Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things. For me … Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”
The maximum that Disney has done in featuring the LGBTQ community in their movies was subtly hinting at Josh Gad’s character as Lefou in Beauty and the Beast. Also in Thor: Ragnarok, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie was depicted as a bisexual, although there are no actual scenes that signify she’s not straight. A lesbian romance had been removed from Marvel’s latest outing, Black Panther. Idina Menzel who voices Elsa revealed that she supports the idea.
“I think it’s great that she’s stirring it up. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out. No matter what, (Elsa) changed my life.”
However, chances of Elsa having a girlfriend in Frozen 2 seem very slim. This will be a movie aimed at younger audiences. Still, it seems like the filmmakers are interested in representing this sometime in the future. Frozen two is expected to release on November 27, 2019.
