Universal’s Battlestar Galactica film is now moving forward and director, Francis Lawrence had offered a very interesting update while he was promoting Red Sparrow. There is no indication as to when the production will start, but the filmmaker is developing a script with Lisa Joy. He had also filmmaker revealed that there is a possibility that a few iconic roles from the TV series might be gender-swapped. This is what he had to say:
“Yes, absolutely 100 per cent! I’m not going to give any details but 100% there’s room for that.”
While there is no movement on this project after Lawrence had been brought in as the director in 2016, he had revealed that Battlestar Galactica is happening but he did not offer any carting updates. The director had reiterated the statements from and confirmed that he is working on this project with Joy
“Yeah we’re still working on that. I’ve been developing that for a while. I’ve been working with Lisa Joy who’s been fantastic, she’s one of the creators of Westworld and she’s been doing a fantastic job.It’s taken a while because she’s done two seasons of Westworld while writing this and I’ve been making Red Sparrow while working on this so it’s been a while. Yes it’s a reimagining, it’s not a continuation of the series, it’s a standalone piece.”
What is interesting is that Battlestar Galactica series from Ronald D. Moore had featured a gender-swapped character-
Lieutenant Starbuck character in the original film had been turned into Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace and was played by Katee Sackhoff.
This film is set to be produced by Scott Stuber with Dylan Clark and Michael De Luca. Before Francis and Lisa had been brought on, the studio brought in Jack Paglen and John Orloff and there is no indication is any material from the old scripts has been retained. Considering the huge fan base for Battlestar Galactica, the film may be one of the most highly-anticipated projects.
With these different versions of Battlestar Galactica, there has not been much information about if the movie will take cues from the earlier incarnations.
