Raquel Welch was born as Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois. Her father Armando Carlos Tejada Urquizo was an aeronautical engineer from La Paz, Bolivia, and her mother Josephine Sarah Hall was of English ancestry.

The family relocated from Illinois to San Diego, California when she was two-years-old. Welch attended the Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church, every Sunday.

As a young girl, Raquel desired to perform, and studied ballet from age seven to seventeen, but, gave it up after her instructor said that she didn’t have the right figure. She won beauty titles such as Miss Photogenic and Miss Contour when she was fourteen.
