Jodie Whittaker is an English actress born on 17 June 1982 in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire. She attended Scissett Middle School and Shelley High School before she had trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then graduated in 2005 with the Acting Gold Medal.
She made her debut in the 2006 movie Venus and received nominations by the British Independent Film Award and Satellite Award. She starred in the cult science fiction film Attack the Block, the Black Mirror episode “The Entire History of You,” and as Beth Latimer in Broadchurch. The BBC announced that she would become the thirteenth and first female incarnation of The Doctor in the British TV series Doctor Who. She formally assumed the role from Peter Capaldi in the 2017 Christmas special episode “Twice Upon a Time” when Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor regenerated into Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. She will appear in her first full series as Doctor Who in the eleventh series, in late 2018.
Reactions to Whittaker’s casting was mostly positive, although a sizeable minority felt the Doctor was only ever meant to be male and criticised the casting as an exercise in political correctness.
Jodie Whittaker is married to American actor and writer, Christian Contreras. Their first child was born in 2015. Her nephew Harry Whittaker, who died at the age of three had Down syndrome and appeared as Leo Goskirk, a character with Down Syndrome in Emmerdale.
