The Dandridge Sisters was booked for several high-profile nightclubs like Cotton Club and Apollo Theatre and her first on-screen appearance was in a small part in a short comedy, Teacher’s Beau in 1935. As a part of The Dandridge Sisters, she also appeared in A Day at the Races, The Big Broadcast of 1936, etc.

She appeared in her first credited role in Four Shall Die in 1940. Apart from appearing in films and stage, she also performed as a band singer in several companies, Count Basie, Pillow to Post, Louis Armstrong, etc. In 1953, she was cast in the black musical film, Carmen Jones and the film was a huge hit and she got many positive reviews.

She was nominated for the Academy Award for her performance. She also appeared the role of Tuptim in the film, The King and I. She became the first black performer who opened at the Empire Room inside a hotel in New York in 1955. Her biggest breakthrough came in 1959 when she was cast in the film, Progy and Bess for which she was nominated for an award.

Her last appearance in the films was in 1961 in the television film, The Murder Men. From 1942-1951, she was married to Harold Nicholas with whom she had a daughter. Later in 1959, she married Jack Denison but got divorced in 1962.
