Songbird is an organizing member of the original Thunderbolts. She was previously recognized as the supervillain, Screaming Mimi. Melissa Gold did not have a good childhood. When the group decided to turn to crime to make more money, they were tried and jailed after a defeat by the hero recognized as Quasar. Melissa Gold first occurred in Marvel Two-in-One issue 54 in 1979 as Screaming Mimi and was established by Ralph Macchio, Mark Gruenwald, and John Byrne.
Her first appearance as Songbird was in Incredible Hulk #449. Songbirds could originally produce supersonic screams which could cause a variety of effects such as disorientation, hallucinations, and unconsciousness.
