In her words A year back this past spring, I was at a resort in Mexico, celebrating the beach with my best friend and living in a bikini. The year before I’d been at the same resort, but back then I almost didn’t believe myself—I was fighting at the time. As I posted photos from the trip, one thing shortly became apparent: the same resort, same girl, very different body. I’d earned weight over the previous year, and my followers were noticing the drastic change. “Oh look, she’s just hit puberty,” commenter speculated. But they were so off base—the year before I’d been struggling with anorexia.
I had increased weight since the last time I was at that Mexican resort. I’d gotten help and gotten healthier. All these young girls were following me and commenting on my posts, and I realized I didn’t want them to be following a lie. I couldn’t allow little girls, or little boys, or whoever, to look at the changes in my body and think I’d just hit puberty—that the skinny photos of me from the year before were just a natural prepubescent body. Fairly I took my phone down to the coast to be alone and began drafting an Instagram post—just writing it down helped me a lot. I started crying. Even for me, it was powerful to read the truth. I felt lighter.
