Born as Muriel Teresa Wright on October 27, 1918 (died on March 6, 2005), she was an American actress. She was born in Harlem, New York City. Her parents separated when she was a child. She was raised in Maplewood, New Jersey where she attended the Columbia High School. After seeing the performance of Helen Hayes in Victoria Regina at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City in 1936, Wright became interested in acting and started playing leading roles in school plays.

She received a scholarship to the Wharf Theater in Provincetown, Massachussets, where she worked as an apprentice for two summers. After graduating from high school in 1938, she moved to New York and shortened her name to Teresa Wright. She was hired as an understudy to Dorothy McGuire and Martha Scott for the part of Emily in a stage production of Our Town.

She received two nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1941 for her debut in The Little Foxes and in 1942 for Mrs. Miniver, winning on the second time.
