Born as Ricki Pamela Lake on September 21, 1968 in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, she is an American actress, television presenter and producer. Her parents are Jill (a homemaker) and Barry Lake (a pharmacist), but, she was brought up by her paternal grandmother Sylvia Lake until she died in 1978. Lake attended the Ithaca College for one year.

Lake debuted in the films as Tracy Turnblad, the leading character in John Waters’ iconic 1988 film Hairspray. Lake is most famous for her portrayal of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. She is also famous for her internationally broadcast talk show that was aired from September 2003 until May 2004. At the time of her show’s debut, she was 24, and at that time was the youngest person to host a syndicated talk show.

In autumn 2012, Lake started a second syndicated talk show project The Ricki Lake Show (called as The New Ricki Lake Show) which aired on weekdays. Although the show got cancelled in 2013 after a single season, but, Lake won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host.

Lake’s struggles with weight are also well-known. She confessed in the year 2011 that the insecurity arising out of abuse during her childhood made her a heavy eater. In the early 1990s, prior to the premiere of her talk show, Lake went on a diet and shed 100 pounds in only six months. During her pregnancy, she admitted having been a yo-yo dieter, but, after her second son was born, she started following a healthier diet and soon lost 30 pounds more, which according to her, got more noticed than her earlier loss of 100

pounds. She has since maintained her weight for nearly two decades.
