Born as Olesya Yurivna Rulin on March 17, 1986 in Moscow, Russian SFSR, former Soviet Union, she is a Russian-American actress. She is renowned for co-starring in all the three films of the High School Musical franchise where she played the role of Kelsi Nielsen. She also played starring roles in films like Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous (2008), Flying By (2009), Expecting Mary (2010), and Family Weekend (2013).

She spent her formative years in Likhaoslavl, Russia. When she was eight years of age, she emigrated to the United States to unite with her father who had done the same two years earlier. They initially lived in Texas and later moved to Utah. Rulin attended the West Jordan Middle School during her Utah days.

Rulin is a trained ballet dancer. At the age of 12, she had participated in a model search contest at the encouragement of her mother and won representation by four different agencies. She is also a good piano player. Before she became a full-time actress, she spent a year working as a certified nursing assistante and also at stores like Victoria’s Secret. She was employed at a Nordstrom store at the time of the release of the first High School Musical film. She was studying economics in Paris at the time when the High School Musical 2’s casting was going on. Rulin graduated from West Jordan High School in the yar 2005. She is a pescatarian and can read, write and speak fluently in Russian. Olesya has devoted a lot of time to charity and cleaned up a number of beaches, spent time with homeless dogs and gave away some dresses for charity.

Apart from her role in High School Musical and its two sequels, she also acted in the Disney Channel Original Movies Halloweentown High, The Poof Point, and Hounded. She also acted in the TV series Everwood and the big screen films Forever Strong, Mobsters and Mormons and The Dance.

Rulin played a more prominent role in High School Musical 2 compared to the first and she reprised the same role in High School Musical 3: Senior Year, again with a larger part. She performed in three songs one of which was a duet alongside Lucas Grabeel. Rulin co-starred alongside Jessica Simpson in the movie Major Movie Star (it had released in the US under the title Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous). In the year 2009, Rulin co-starred with Billy Ray Cyrus and Heather Locklear in a drama movie Flying By.

In the year 2010, Rulin starred in Expecting Mary co-starring Elliott Gould, Linda Gray, Lainie Kazan, Cloris Leachman, Della Reese, Cybil Shepard, Gene Simmons, and Fred Willard.

In the year 2013, she starred in Family Weekend with Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Modine.

It was announced in August 2014 that Rulin was going to play the role of Callista Secor in the PlayStation Network series Powers.
