Born as Ellen Miriam Hopkins in Savannah, Georgia, USA, she was an American actress. Being born into a rich family gave her access to finest educational institutions such as Goddard Seminary in Plainfield, Vermont and Syracuse University, New York State. She studied dance in New York and her first brush with show biz was as a chorus girl when she was 20. By the year 1928, she had started appearing in stock companies on the East Coast and was getting increasingly positive reviews. She decided to work in films in 1930 and signed with Paramount Studios. Having been a known Broadway player, Paramount considered her as a seasoned performer courtesy of the reviews. She debuted in Fast and Loose (1930). She then appeared in 24 Hours (1931) and The Smiling Lieutenant (1931). She was still considered to be a newcomer, but, displayed talent that had the trappings of stardom. She finished the year by appearing in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931). She later appeared in The World and The Flesh (1932) and Dancers in the Dark (both in 1932). She had another major hit In Two Kinds of Women in the same year and later featured in Trouble in Paradise (1932). She was propelled to the top of the earnings chart at Paramount. She appeared in the titular role in The Story of Temple Drake (1933), but, the studio had to water down the violence and the scenes where the character was raped to get approved. Still the film was a huge hit.

However, subsequently she started getting less offers, and the work slowdown made her return to the stage. She appeared in two films in 1940, none in 1941 and one in each in 1942 and 1943.

Her final cinematic appearance was in Savage Intruder (1970). On October 9, 1972, she passed away after a heart attack in New York City.
