Born on June 30, 1917 as Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (died on May 9, 2010), she was an American singer, dancer, actress and civil rights activist. She was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Her father Edwin Fletcher “Teddy” Horne Jr. was a numbers kingpin in the gambling arena and he left the family when she was three. At the age of five, Horne was sent to live in Georgia. For a number of years, she travelled with her mother. From 1927 to 1929, she lived with her uncle, who later served as an adviser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Horne briefly stayed in Atlanta with her mother, but, they returned to New York when she was 12. She then attended an all-girls public high school named Girls High School in Brooklyn that later became Boys and Girls High School, but, she left school without graduating. She was 18 when Horne moved to her father’s home in Pittsburgh, and stayed in the city’s Little Harlem for close to five years and learning from native Pittsburgh residents Billy Strayhorn and Billy Eckstine etc.

She had an over 7 decades long career in film, television and theater. Horne became a nightclub performer before she moved to Hollywood.

As a nightclub performer, she participated in the March on Washington in Augustt 1963, and continued to work as a nightclubs and television performer. Along-side she kept releasing successful record albums. She announced her retirement in March 1980, but, in the next year, she appeared in a one woman show titled Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which had over three hundred performances on Broadway. She the undertook a tour of the country earning various awards and acclaims. She disappeared from the public eye in 2000, and on May 9, 2010, she died of a heart failure at the age of 92.
