Born on Februrary 26, 1991 in Seoul, South Korea, she is a South Korean singer, songwriter and rapper, best known by her professional name CL. She spent a lot of her early life in Japan and France. At the age of 13, she relocated to Paris alone and studied there for two years. She auditioned with YG Entertainment when she was 15-years-old.

Lee first featured on a song recording was Big Bang’s “Intro (Hot Issue)” in 2007. Later in 2007, she gave her first on-stage performance at Seoul Broadcasting System’s Gayo Daejeon alongside her label mates. The group’s number one single “I Don’t Care” from their first EP, 2NE1 won them the “song of the year” award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards, making them the first group to win a daesang in the debut year.

In August 2009, CL teamed up with G-Dragon, and Teddy Park of 1TYM for the single “The Leaders” which was featured on the first solo album of G-Dragon, Heartbreaker. In the same month, after 2NE1 ended the ‘I Don’t Care” promotions, CL collaborated with Minzy for “Please Don’t Go,” which reached the number six on the Gaon Chart by November end.

CL’s first solo single “The Baddest Female” came out on May 28, 2013.” In October 2014, it was announced that CL was going to debut as a solo artist the following year in the United States, teaming up with Scooter Braun as her manager. On January 4, 2018, it was reported that CL would make her Hollywood debut as an actress in Peter Berg’s film Mile 22 co-starring Mark Wahlberg.

On February 25, 2018, CL gave a performance at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, where she performed parts from “The Baddest Female” and the 2NE1 global hit “I Am The Best.” CL met South Korean President Moon Jae-In, First Lady Kim Jung-sook, EXO, and U.S.’s First Daughter Ivanka Trump, at the event.

CL quotes 1TYM leader Teddy Park, who has produced most of the music for 2NE1, as an influence and also confesses to having been inspired by Madonna, Queen, and Lauryn Hill.
