Born on February 9, 1922 (died on February 17, 2010), Kathryn Grayson was an American actress and coloratura soprano. She was born as Zelma Kathryn Elisabeth Hedrick in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Charles E. Hedrick, a building contractor realtor, and Lillian Grayson Hedrick. Her mother had Siberian, Native American and English origins whereas her father was of German, Siberian, Hungarian and Polish origins.

The Hedricks relocated to Kirkwood, Missouri, outside St. Louis where the young Kathryn was discovered singing on the empty stage of the St. Louis Municipal Opera House by a janitor, who introduced her to Frances Marshall of the Chicago Civic Opera, who gave her voice lessons. Grayson’s sister, Frances Raceburn (born as Mildred Hedrick), was also an actress and singer. The two sisters appeared side-by-side in the film Seven Sweethearts. She had two brothers, Clarence “Bud” E. Hedrick, and Harold. The family relocated to California when she was 15.

She was under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from the early 1940s and soon established a successful career courtesy of her work in the musicals. She played a number of supporting roles, and was a lead performer in films like Thousands Cheer (1943), Anchors Aweigh (1945) alongside Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, and Show Boat (1951) and Kiss Me Kate (1953), both with Howard Keel.

Upon the decline of the trend of musicals, she started working in theatre, and appeared in Camelot (1962-1964). Later in the 1960s, she performed in a number of operas such as La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, Orpheus In The Underworld and La Traviata.
