Born on August 30, 1906 (died on December 25, 1979), Rose Joan Blondell was an American actress who appeared in films and TV series for over fifty years. During her childhood, her parents used to relocate frequently and she made her stage debut as a four month old infant, carried in a cradle as the daughter of Peggy Astaire in The Greatest Love. Her family comprised of a vaudeville troupe, the “Bouncing Blondells.”

She spent a year in Honolulu (1914-1915), and six years in Australia. She had seen most of the world when her family eventually settled in Dallas, Texas when she was a teenager. As Rosebud Blondell, she won the 1926 Miss Dallas pageant, was a finalist in an early version of the Miss Universe in May 1926, and was placed fourth in Miss America 1926 pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She attended Santa Monica High School where she acted in school plays and worked as the yearbook editor. She attended the University of North Texas, and a teacher’s college in Denton.

Her career started in vaudeville.

After winning a beauty pageant, she started a film career. She went on to create a reputation of a sexy, smart blonde, and was a pre-Code staple in Warner Bros. appearing in more than 100 film and TV projects. She was highly active in the movies in the 1930s, and co-starred with Glenda Farrell in nine movies where the duo played the characters of gold diggers. Blondell kept acting in films throughout her life, often in minor character roles or supporting roles on television. She received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination in The Blue Veil (1951).

Towards the end of her life, Blondell got nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Opening Night (1977). She also appeared in two more films,Grease (1978), and The Champ (1979) that was released shortly before she perished to leukemia.
