Born in Moscow, Russia as Elena Viacheslavovna Dementieva on October 15, 1981, she is a former Russian professional tennis player. Both her parents were recreational tennis players. However, she was rejected by Dynamo Sports Club and the Central Red Army Tennis Club when she was seven-years-old. She then enrolled at Spartak Tennis Club, where Rauza Islanova (mother of Marat Safin and Dinara Safin) coached her for three years. She then moved to the Central Red Army Club where Sergei Pashkov trained her when she was eleven. Later her mother Vera and older brother Vsevolod coached her.

Dementieva’s international debut was in the tournament, Les Petits As, in France which she won at the age of 13. She made it to the WTA top 500 in the year 1997 and turned professional in 1998. In 1999, she entered the WTA top 100. In the same year Dementieva played for Russia in the Fed Cup final against the US where she scored the only point for Russia when she defeated Venus Williams 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), after recovering from a 4-1 deficit in the third set. She won the silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and eventually won the singles gold medal at the 2998 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, China. Throughout her career, Dementieva won 16 WTA singles titles, reached the finals of the 2004 French Open and the 2004 US Open as well as seven other Grand Slam seminfinals. Dementieva was a member of the Russian team that won the Fed Cup in 2005. As a doubles player, she won the 2002 WTA Championship Doubles with Janette Husarova and was also runner-up in two US Open doubles finals, in 2002 with Husarova and in 2005 with Flavia Pennetta. Dementieva’s career best ranking came when she reached World Number 3 on April 6, 2009. She retired from the sport on October 29, 2010, after playing her final match at the 2010 WTA Tour Championships. Dementieva was ranked World Number 9 at the time of her retirement, and between 2003 and 2010, she had only once been out of the top 10 in the year 2007.

Elena Dementieva owns homes in Monte Carlo, Moscow, and Boca Raton, Florida. She married Russian hockey player Maxim Afinogenov on July 16, 2011 in Moscow. Their first child, Veronica was born in April 2014.
