Born in Moscow, Russia as Elena Viacheslavovna Dementieva on October 15, 1981, she is a former Russian professional tennis player. Both her parents were recreational tennis players. However, she was rejected by Dynamo Sports Club and the Central Red Army Tennis Club when she was seven-years-old. She then enrolled at Spartak Tennis Club, where Rauza Islanova (mother of Marat Safin and Dinara Safin) coached her for three years. Dementieva’s international debut was in the tournament, Les Petits As, in France which she won at the age of 13. She made it to the WTA top 500 in the year 1997 and turned professional in 1998.
