Once upon a time, on the world of Argus, the talented and magically capable race of the eredar caught the attention of the Sargeras, the Destroyer of Worlds. Sargeras offered the three leaders of the eredar with previously unseen power. The trio Kil’jaeden, Archimonde and Velen were asked to serve with unquestioning loyalty in return of the power. Velen had a disturbing vision who saw the eredar being turned into terrible demons, the first intelligent beings of the Legion, which would then become incredibly powerful and destroy all life. However, despite being warned by Velen, Kil’jaeden and Archimonde went ahead and accepted Sargeras’ offer. Velen was shattered at the decision of his former friends and prayed for help. Thankfully, a benevolent naaru responded to his call. The energy beings, just like Velen had foreseen the creation of the Burning Legion.

The naaru offered to take Velen and other believers into refuge. Velen secretly gathered those fellow eredar who appeared to be trustworthy and named them the draenei, or “exiled ones.” Upon the return of Sargeras to Argus, he turned many willing eredar into demons, and the draenei somehow escaped from their homeworld. Angered by this, Kil’jaeden resolved to hunt Velen to the ends of the creation. As the Burning Legion pursued the draenei around the universe, the naaru guided them to the light. Greatly impacted, the draenei took a vow to honor the Light and maintain naaru’s ideals. Over a period of time, the draenei set up home on a remote world and met the shamanistic orcs residing there. The draenei called their new home as Draenor or “Exiles’ Refuge.”

Kil’jaeden kept hunting the exiles, and eventually discovered the idyllic world and its peaceful inhabitants. After manipulating the shaman Ner’zhul, the demon lord started infiltrating the orcs. When Ner’zhul declined to serve the Legion’s mission beyond a certain point, Kil’jaeden relied on his apprentice. Gul’dan turned the orcs into frenzied blood-thirsty beings, and the newly established Horde started slaughtering the peace-loving draenei. The campaign by orcs was very successful and more than 60% of the draenei were massacred, but, a small group of survivors escaped, including the noble Velen. The orcs invaded Azeroth using Medivh’s Dark Portal. After many years, after the second war, Ner’zhul’s other portals destroyed Draenor.

Of late, Velen and the surviving draenei got control of one of Tempest Keep’s satellite structures and escaped Azeroth by using it. Now they are looking for allies in their eternal battle against the Burning Crusade.

Upon the incursion of Alliance and Horde armies into the land of Northrend, the draenei have played lesser role. Their biggest presence is with Harbinger Vurenn and his entourage in Borean Tundra’s Valiance Keep. Even in the Northend, the draenei leader practices honesty and the Light and that is crucial in foiling the plans of the Cult of the Damned.
