Born as Chulpan Nailevna Khamatova on October 1, 1975 in Kazan, Tatar, ASSR, in the former Soviet Union, she is a Russian film, theater and TV actress of Volga Tatar origins. Her name Chulpan means “morning star” in Tatar language. Her parents Marina Khamatova and Nail Khamatov are both engineers. During her childhood, she was engaged in figure skating and from the eighth grade she studied at the mathematical school of Kazan Federal University. She was accepted at the Kazan State Finance and Economics Institute, but, later changed her mind and entered the Kazan Theater School. Teachers Juno Kareva and Vadim Keshner advised and helped her to continue her studies in Moscow, and she entered Russian Academy of Theatre Arts, in the course of Alexei Borodin.

Khamatova has worked in various German language films and also in a number of Russian films and TV serials. Khamatova started her acting career during the third year of GITIS when Vadim Abdrashitov invited her to play the role of Katya in The Time of the Dancer. Her breakthrough role came in Country of the Deaf by Valery Todorovsky where she played the role of Rita.

The film was about deaf-mute people and she had to learn sign language for this role. Khamatova’s other famous film appearances include Luna Papa (1999), 72 Meters (2004), The Fall of the Empire (2005), Children of the Arbat (2004) and Garpastum (2005). She is internationally famous for starring in Good Bye Lenin! (2003) where she played Lara, the girlfriend of the leading character and his mother’s nurse.

She was on the six-person jury of the Venice Film Festival in 2006 which was headed by Catherine Deneuve. In the following year, she participated with professional ice dancer Roman Kostomarov on the Channel One figure skating competition Ice Age and won it.

Khamatova got married to the Russian actor and composer Ivan Volkov from 1995 to 2002. Later she dated ballet dancer Aleksei Dubin. Since 2009, she dated Russian actor and director Alexander Shein. She has three daughters named Arina, Asya and Iya. She can speak Russian, German, English and Portuguese fluently, but, doesn’t speak Tatar.
