Born on December 21, 1978 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Rutina Wesley is an American actress. Rutina’s father, Ivery Wheeler is a professional tap dancer, and her mother Cassandra Wesley was a showgirl. She went to high school at the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts. She studied dance at Simba Studios and at the West Las Vegas Arts Center. During her time at the Las Vegas Academy, she missed a number of other auditions for college training programs and was eventually accepted by the University of Evansville in Indiana. She was reluctant to go there because of a lack of minorities in the state. After she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance in 2001, her grandmother suggested her to do a nursing course, but, she insisted on continuing with artistic education. She joined the Juilliard School in 2001, and graduated in May 2005 (Group 34), and that included a summer spent at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. At Juilliard, she became good friends with her future co-star Nelsan Ellis.

In December 2006, Wesley was featured in David Hare’s Broadway play The Vertical Hour. In 2007, Wesley also featured in The Public Theater production of In Darfur by playwright Winter Miller, co-starring Heather Raffo, Aaron Lohr and others. Wesley also played a minor role in the movie Hitch (2005), which was later edited out in the final cut. In 2007, she debuted on the big screen as the main character in the film How She Move made by British director Ian Iqbal Rashid. Wesley auditioned for the part of Tara Thornton in the HBO series True Blood in 2007 and she got the role after the creator Alan Ball selected her because “she was the first person who showed Tara’s vulnerable side.” In January 2015, an announcement was made that Wesley has been cast in a recurring role on the NBC drama series Hannibal.
