Leron then captures them and imprisons Aquaman and her in Dimension Aqua. With the help of Quisp, Aquaman frees Mera and goes on to defeat Leron. The character abdicates the throne of Xebel to Queen V’lana, she then goes back to Atlantis and marries Aquaman. They then have a son, Arthur Curry, Jr., and he is known as Aquababy.

Then, Black Manta kidnaps Aquababy and traps him inside a tank and tries to suffocate him. Mera tries her best to find Xebel who has the elements for a healing device that can help her save Aquababy. When Mera arrives, she finds out that her kingdom is taken over by Leron, who has taken Sebel hostage, casting him and the artifacts into the Great Pit.

Mera defeats Leron and his elemental monsters in order to retrieve the device, but sadly, she returns to Atlantis too late, finding her son dead. Their son’s death created a rift between Aquaman and Mera, and they tried their best to relocate to a flooded city to start a new life. Aquaman then left to reform the Justice League in Detroit.

She becomes more unstable with grief and is committed to an asylum in Atlantis. Shortly afterward a giant jellyfish took control of the city. During Aquaman’s battle to free them, Mera escapes and savagely attacks him, blaming his “weak genes” for their son’s death. While defending himself, he accidentally pushes her on a piece of metal.

Thinking she is dead, he buries her in a coffin and takes her to the royal palace. However, she survived, due to her alien physiology. Rising from her coffin, she bitterly reminds Aquaman how little he really knew of her and leaves Atlantis and returns to Dimension Aqua.
