Born as Zara Dampney on June 10, 1986, she is a British beach volleyball player and a former indoor-volleyball player. She was selected as one of the two players to take the home nation qualification berth at the 2012 London Olympics alongwith her teammate Shauna Mullin. Dampney was born in Christchurch and she spent her entire childhood in Dorset. She played indoor volleyball while studying at the Parkstone Grammar School, and after the school she went to the University of Sheffield where she studied Law. She competed for the British adult indoor volleyball team at the age of sixteen and became a member of the Wessex Volleyball Club.

After she obtained her university degree, Dampney debuted on the Federation Internationale de Volleyball tour in the year 2009, and was a member of the first British team to compete on the tour in a decade. The team ended up ninth which was Dampney’s best finish on the tour.

While she was on the tour along with her partner Shauna Mullin, She also sold advertising space on the back of her bikini bottoms, displaying a QR code for the bookmaker Betfair. They are generally funded by the National Lottery. They competed at the Olympic trial event in London and won all of their group games, but, lost in the second knockout round where the Brazilian team defeated them and won the tournament subsequently. During the run-up to the Games, they played a demonstration match in Parliament Square, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Dampney and Mullin were awarded the host nation slot for the beach volleyball at the 2012 Summer Olympics, London, where the events were held on Horse Guards Parade. They were the first British duo to participate in the sport at an Olympic Games. At the time of the announcement of their participation in London Olympics, they were ranked number 37 in the world.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Dampney and Mullin failed to qualify from the group F, but, performed well enough to get a chance to play in the lucky loser match, where they were defeated by the Schwaiger sisters from Austria.
