Sukie Kim is a Korean American writer, a Guggenehim fellow and the author of the award winning novel The Interpreter, and a New York Times Bestselling literary nonfiction Without There Is No Us: Undercover Among The Sons of North Korea’s Elite. According to Kim, she is the only writer to have ever lived undercover in North Korea. She was born in Seoul, South Korea and immigrated to the USA with her family when she was thirteen, and moved to the outer boroughs of New York City. Kim graduated from Barnard College with a BA in English. She also spent many years in London and studied East Asian literature at the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Her debut novel, The Interpreter was a murder mystery about a young Korean-American woman named Suzy Park, living in New York City and trying to find why her shopkeeper parents were murdered. She briefly worked as an interpreter in New York City to understand the life of an interpreter. The novel won the PEN Beyond Margins Award and the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award and was also a finalist for a Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. The novel was translated into Dutch, French, Korean, Italian and Japanese. Kim went to North Korea in February 2002 to take part in the 60^th Birthday Celebration of Kim Jong – II and also wrote a cover essay for The New York Review of Books. Kim accompanied the New York Philharmonic in February 2008, when they travelled to Pyongyang for a historical cultural visit to North Korea from the US. Her next book, Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among The Sons of North Korea’s Elite, is a literary non-fiction related to the six months she spent in North Korea as an English teacher to the future leaders of the country at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. She gave a TED Talk in 2015 “What It’s Like To Go Undercover In North Korea” and it received a standing ovation from the audience including Bill Gates and Al Gore, and has received millions of views online. The book led to controversy due to the fact that the reviewers alleged that Kim had caused harm to the students mentioned by her. However, she refuted the allegations.

Kim is a contributing editor at The New Republic. In March 2016, Kim did the profiling of GOP candidate Marco Rubio during his 2016 Presidential Campaign for the magazine.
